Ibinabo Laura Oboro (FMCPath, MPH, MB, BS) is a Professor of Medical Microbiology and Parasitology; Associate Dean, Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences in the College of Medical Sciences and member of the Senate Research Ethics Committee of the Rivers State University, and Visiting Professor at PAMO University of Medical Sciences, Rivers State, Nigeria.
She is also an Honorary Consultant Clinical Microbiologist; Chairman, Research Ethics Committee and Co-Chair, Infection Prevention and Control/Antimicrobial Stewardship (IPC/AMS) committee of the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital and laboratory lead for the hospital Infectious Disease Unit. A fellow and examiner of the Faculty of Pathology of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria and Academic coordinator for College of Nigerian Pathologists, Rivers State.
Prof. Oboro is the pioneer Editor-in-Chief for the African Journal of Research in Medical and Health Sciences, published by the Medical and Dental Consultants’ Association of Nigeria, Rivers State Government Hospitals. She is also a reviewer for reputable journals, member of various research and technical working groups, Editorial boards, professional and religious organizations where she serves in leadership capacities. She has made numerous publications and presentations in the field of Medical Microbiology and infectious diseases in various peer-reviewed journals and conferences respectively. She is certified in Leadership and Management (University of Washington & ASCON Nigeria), Malaria (HarvardX) and Good Clinical and Laboratory Practice (Global Health Network) amongst others.
She is an active member of various professional bodies including the College of Nigerian Pathologists, Medical women’s association, Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Disease Society of Nigeria and American Society for Microbiology. Had served as Assistant Director, Centre for Malaria Research and Phytomedicine; Pathologist in the COVID diagnostic center of the University of Port Harcourt and Molecular Laboratory lead II in the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital.
Over the past fifteen years, Ibinabo Oboro has trained students of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Pharmacy, postgraduate students of Public Health and resident doctors. She has provided clinical microbiology services including Infection Prevention and Control and Antimicrobial Stewardship, as well as molecular laboratory services; services she is passionate about and is well known to drive continuous quality improvement.
Research areas include Malaria, Toxoplasmosis, Antimicrobial Policies and Stewardship, Infection Prevention and Control, Sexually transmitted infections and Opportunistic infections.
